New ERC-7730 framework delivers human-readable transaction details, backed by major wallets and security teams, in push to protect users after major hacks
The Ethereum Foundation has announced the launch of Clear Signing, a new open standard designed to end the longstanding practice of blind signing in cryptocurrency transactions. The initiative, detailed in an official blog post, aims to make transaction approvals understandable to regular users, strengthening security across the ecosystem.
Blind signing occurs when wallets display raw hexadecimal data or complex code that most users cannot interpret. This gap has been exploited in numerous attacks, allowing malicious contracts to drain funds while users believe they are performing legitimate actions.
The technical foundation is ERC-7730, an open standard first proposed by Ledger. It uses a JSON-based description format linked to contract addresses through a public registry. Wallets can pull verified descriptions to show users exactly what a transaction will do — such as asset transfers, approvals, or other actions — in plain language.
Importantly, the system requires no changes to existing smart contracts or on-chain logic. Descriptors live off-chain, allowing immediate benefits for current applications while maintaining full verifiability through independent security reviews.
A broad working group contributed to the effort, including hardware wallet leaders Ledger and Trezor, software wallets like MetaMask, infrastructure providers such as WalletConnect and Fireblocks, and security specialists including ZKnox, Sourcify, Cyfrin, and Zama. The Ethereum Foundation’s Trillion Dollar Security Initiative will host the registry infrastructure.

The timing of the announcement follows high-profile incidents, including the Bybit hack where attackers exploited signing interfaces to move significant value. Such events highlighted how unclear approval screens create exploitable weaknesses even for sophisticated users and institutions.
Phishing and approval scams continue to represent a major threat. Industry data points to millions of blocked attempts in recent months, underscoring the need for better user-facing security tools.
Compatible wallets will begin displaying clear summaries instead of raw data. Users will see details like exact assets involved, recipients, limits, and conditions before confirming. Developers can submit descriptors for their contracts to the registry, with community verification adding trust layers.
The Ethereum Foundation encourages widespread adoption, providing tooling libraries in multiple languages to accelerate integration. The goal is to make "What You See Is What You Sign" the standard across the network.
This development represents a significant step toward making self-custody safer for both retail users and institutions. As Ethereum continues to mature, improvements like Clear Signing address critical usability and security gaps that have persisted since the network's early days.
