OpenAI plans to launch GPT-5.6 and its variants this Thursday following Department of Commerce approval after a security review
The US Department of Commerce granted approval for OpenAI to proceed with a wider rollout of its GPT-5.6 model family. The decision came after weeks of evaluation under a voluntary framework established for advanced AI systems. OpenAI had previously limited access to a select group of partners at the request of officials concerned about potential security risks, including software vulnerabilities.
Officials from the Center for AI Standards and Innovation conducted testing on the models. OpenAI maintained a technical team in Washington to address questions during the process. The review aligned with efforts to set standards for frontier AI deployments.
OpenAI announced on X that GPT-5.6 Sol along with Terra and Luna would become publicly available on Thursday. The company expanded preview access globally in preparation. This follows an earlier delay requested by authorities to allow for additional safeguards.
OpenAI stated during the initial pause that such government processes should not become standard long term. The firm committed to collaboration on cybersecurity frameworks.
Similar reviews affected other developers. Anthropic recently regained access to its models after comparable restrictions, with certain versions limited to trusted partners.
The approval occurs as the Trump administration works on standards for advanced AI. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick noted commitments from companies for risk management and reporting of issues. The executive order provides up to 30 days for assessment before broad deployment.
Discussions between OpenAI leadership and administration officials included proposals for government equity participation. CEO Sam Altman engaged with figures including Treasury and Commerce secretaries on these matters.
OpenAI continues infrastructure work alongside model releases. The firm introduced its Jalapeño custom AI chip for inference tasks. Recent funding rounds included major commitments from investors such as SoftBank.
The models incorporate new reasoning features for tasks in coding, cybersecurity, and other areas, with added protections against misuse.
| Model Variant | Positioning |
