Vanguard, one of the world's largest asset managers, has created a new senior role focused on digital assets, marking a change in its approach to cryptocurrency and blockchain-related areas after years of limited involvement
Vanguard has listed a position for Head of Digital Assets within its Personal Wealth division. The role requires building a multi-year plan for digital assets, setting strategy, and handling execution across the organization. The executive will act as the main expert on the topic for personal wealth clients.
Responsibilities include assessing opportunities in tokenization, stablecoins, custody models, blockchain settlement, and related operating structures. The hire will also decide on building internal capabilities, forming partnerships, or pausing certain activities. Additionally, the position involves coordination with product, technology, operations, legal, and compliance teams.
The asset manager oversees approximately $12 trillion in assets. For years, Vanguard maintained a cautious view toward cryptocurrencies, describing Bitcoin as unsuitable for long-term portfolios due to its volatility. In early 2024, the firm chose not to offer spot Bitcoin ETFs on its platform and restricted purchases.
This approach started to adjust under CEO Salim Ramji, who previously worked at BlackRock where he contributed to the launch of a major Bitcoin ETF. In December 2025, Vanguard began permitting clients to trade certain cryptocurrency ETFs and mutual funds on its brokerage platform.
Bloomberg Senior ETF Analyst Eric Balchunas noted surprise at the job posting, as he expected Vanguard to limit activities to listing existing crypto ETFs. ETF analyst Nate Geraci commented on the change, referencing the firm's prior restrictions on client purchases.
The job listing does not indicate immediate plans for Vanguard to launch its own crypto products. The firm has stated it has no current intention to issue proprietary cryptocurrency investment vehicles.
Other large firms have expanded their digital asset activities. BlackRock and Fidelity offer spot Bitcoin ETFs, while several managers explore tokenization of real-world assets. Vanguard's move places it in a position to evaluate these developments more systematically.
The new role extends to client-facing products and infrastructure considerations, suggesting a structured review of how digital assets might fit into Vanguard's overall operations for personal wealth clients.
