Grayscale Research argues that Strategy's recent $216 million Bitcoin disposal reduces financing risks and may support a more stable price foundation for BTC. The move boosted cash reserves while the company retains a massive Bitcoin position
Strategy sold 3,588 BTC in two tranches between late June and early July, generating approximately $216 million. The first portion of 1,363 BTC sold at an average price around $59,256, followed by 2,225 BTC at about $60,773. These funds went toward preferred stock dividend payments and replenishing dollar reserves.
Following the sale, Strategy holds 843,775 BTC, still representing more than 4% of Bitcoin's total supply. The company maintains a substantial position acquired at an average cost basis of roughly $74,476 per coin. Cash reserves now stand at $2.55 billion.
Grayscale Research described the transaction as a measured approach that addresses potential financing pressures. Head of Research Zach Pandl noted that Strategy's balance sheet remains sound, with approximately $52 billion in Bitcoin holdings against $7 billion in debt. Annual dividend obligations on preferred equities stay below $2 billion.
The sale demonstrates willingness to use portions of Bitcoin holdings for operational needs rather than risking liquidity shortfalls. This approach, according to Grayscale, lowers the chance of forced large-scale disposals during market stress periods.
Strategy's preferred stock, particularly STRC, had faced pressure amid questions about dividend sustainability. Following the sale announcement and execution, STRC showed a rebound, trading near $90 levels. Grayscale pointed to this recovery as evidence that market participants viewed the action favorably.
The increased dollar reserves provide a buffer equivalent to 17 months of dividend coverage. This financial flexibility supports ongoing operations without immediate pressure on the Bitcoin treasury.
Strategy introduced its Bitcoin monetization program to allow sales for reserve building, dividend payments, and other needs while preserving core Bitcoin exposure. The recent sale fits within this framework announced in late June.
Grayscale's position contrasts with some other institutional commentary, such as from JPMorgan, which raised concerns about potential two-way market impacts from a major holder acting as both buyer and seller. Grayscale maintains that the structured approach strengthens rather than weakens the overall setup.
Bitcoin price initially declined following the sale disclosure but recovered in subsequent trading. The event occurred amid broader market conditions where Strategy reported significant unrealized losses on its holdings due to prior price movements.
Grayscale suggests that Strategy's actions may contribute to conditions where Bitcoin's price can establish firmer support levels. With one large holder demonstrating prudent management of liquidity needs, the market may see reduced overhang concerns.
Strategy continues as the largest corporate Bitcoin holder. Its strategy combines long-term accumulation with selective sales for financial stability. The company has used the proceeds specifically for preferred securities distributions covering instruments like STRF, STRE, STRK, STRD, and STRC.
Market reaction included short-term volatility followed by recovery, with some analysts noting the absorption of the news without deeper price disruption. This outcome aligns with views that the sale addressed specific obligations rather than signaling any fundamental change in Bitcoin commitment.
