Vitalik Buterin has detailed a new technical direction for Ethereum focused on quantum resistance, enhanced scalability, and privacy improvements through a multi-year plan known as Lean Ethereum
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared a strawmap that sets quantum safety, scalability, and privacy as leading areas for development over the next three to four years. The plan touches nearly every layer of the network in a transformation compared in scope to the 2022 Merge that shifted Ethereum to proof-of-stake.
Buterin noted that quantum safety has risen significantly in priority. Finalizing a quantum-safe solution for blobs has become urgent. The roadmap calls for replacing vulnerable cryptographic elements with post-quantum alternatives to prepare for future computing threats.
Native recursive STARK verification forms a central part of this effort. STARKs allow efficient proof of computations, and recursion enables proofs to verify other proofs, supporting better handling of large data volumes while maintaining security.
The plan includes a new scalable state type aimed at supporting up to 100 terabytes of data by 2030. This could lead to substantially lower transaction costs for certain token activities. The Glasterdam upgrade is expected to increase the gas limit, allowing blocks to process more transactions and computations.
These changes target ongoing challenges with state growth and network throughput. By expanding capacity and optimizing verification, the network seeks to reduce fees and improve overall performance without compromising core properties.
Privacy receives treatment as a first-class goal in the Lean Ethereum framework. Plans involve new virtual machine designs based on options like RISC-V or leanISA to enable programmable privacy at scale. This approach aims to integrate confidentiality features directly into the architecture while preserving verifiability and performance.
The upgrades are scheduled across 2026 to 2029, with implementation spanning multiple protocol layers. Buterin described the overall effort as broad, affecting consensus, execution, and data availability components. The Ethereum Foundation continues its role in research and development amid recent organizational adjustments.
