Loopring, known as Ethereum's first zero-knowledge rollup project, has ended operations of its decentralized exchange and automated market maker, citing insufficient user growth and stronger competition from newer scaling solutions
Loopring announced the shutdown on June 28, 2026, via a post on X. Trading services on the decentralized exchange and automated market maker stopped right away, with the protocol's relayer also ceasing operations.
The team described the decision as a graceful end to the project rather than continuing with limited activity. They noted that external factors, such as delistings of the LRC token on major exchanges in 2026, sped up a process that had become unavoidable.
Loopring's team pointed to several core issues. The project never achieved meaningful user adoption. Its original design as an early zk-rollup lacked a virtual machine, which limited composability and practical use cases for payments and applications. This design choice restricted broader ecosystem development.
The developers described themselves as engineers focused on technical work but acknowledged limited success in business development. They also noted that newer zkEVM-based networks, fully compatible with Ethereum smart contracts, surpassed Loopring's specialized architecture.
Loopring raised $45 million in a 2017 initial coin offering and played a role in showing the potential of zk-rollups for Ethereum scaling. It reached a peak total value locked of around $760 million in November 2021. That figure has since dropped nearly 99 percent to approximately $8 million.
The native LRC token followed a similar path, declining from an all-time high of $3.75 to about $0.01. One notable achievement was a 2021 partnership with GameStop to support its NFT marketplace, which launched the next year.
Wallet services had already closed in July 2025, and other DeFi products were wound down earlier. The DEX closure marks the end of the project's remaining core offerings.
Loopring stated it will calculate and publish final user balances, including spot holdings and AMM positions. After a review period, it plans to upgrade the smart contract to enable direct transfers to users' Ethereum wallets in batches. The team will handle all associated gas costs.
This approach aims to provide a straightforward process without requiring users to submit additional proofs.
The shutdown adds to a list of more than 60 crypto projects and protocols that have ended operations in 2026. Other examples include various yield protocols and layer-2 developments facing similar challenges from market conditions and evolving technology.
| Metric | Peak (Nov 2021) | Current |
|---|---|---|
| Total Value Locked | $760 million | $8 million |
| LRC Token Price | $3.75 | $0.01 |
