Charles Hoskinson has begun experimenting with a Cardano smart contract designed to address one of the biggest pain points in self-custody: recovering access to lost or compromised wallets. The system would let users prove ownership of their 24-word recovery phrase through zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP),allowing them to reclaim ADA and Cardano Native Tokens (CNTs) from a dedicated recovery pool without revealing the phrase itself.
Hoskinson shared details of the ongoing tests, stating he plans to collaborate with key ecosystem contributors including Pi Lanningham (CTO at Sundae Labs),Sebastien Guillemot, and the Midnight team to advance the project.
The proposal arrives as the Cardano community deals with fallout from a security breach at SecondFi, a major wallet generator on the network. The incident involved flaws in key-generating software that led to unauthorized access to user wallets. Initial reports indicated around 16 million ADA (roughly $2.4 million) were stolen, but a larger amount—approximately 129 million ADA valued at $18.5 million—was moved through what SecondFi described as emergency rescue measures.
Questions remain about the identity of those involved in moving the larger sum, with Hoskinson noting secondhand information from meetings between Intersect and Emurgo. He emphasized the need for transparency on how funds will be returned to affected users.
Intersect, the Cardano governance entity, has called for a full account of the exploit's origin, the emergency measures, and plans for safeguarding and returning assets, including CNTs and NFTs. The organization stressed that the Cardano blockchain itself was not compromised.
Seed phrase management continues to challenge users across the industry. Traditional 12- or 24-word BIP39 phrases create a single point of failure: lose the phrase, and funds may be gone forever. The proposed ZKP system aims to reduce reliance on trusted third parties during recovery while maintaining strong privacy and security standards.
This approach focuses particularly on handling "white-hat" recovery scenarios, where assets are secured protectively rather than stolen outright. It leverages Cardano's existing technical strengths, including support for zero-knowledge applications through projects like Midnight.
Despite the security incident and challenging market conditions, Cardano shows signs of underlying strength. Recent data indicates daily active addresses reached multi-year highs around 29,000, with increased social discussion amid broader market fear. Analysts note similar patterns have preceded modest relief rallies in the past, though outcomes are not guaranteed.
ADA prices have fallen to levels last consistently seen in December 2020, testing key support zones. However, development activity persists, with Hoskinson also discussing plans for a global Cardano Summit and the growing role of AI tools in ecosystem management.
