BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes sold his recent Ethereum holdings at a loss after a brief accumulation phase, even as other large investors added significant positions near key support levels around $1,700
Arthur Hayes, the co-founder of BitMEX, recently entered and exited an Ethereum position within days, incurring a notable financial setback. On-chain data from Lookonchain shows that Hayes accumulated approximately 5,900 ETH at an average price of about $1,793 per token, for a total investment of roughly $10.58 million. Shortly after, he sold 6,000 ETH at an average price of $1,690, generating approximately $10.14 million and resulting in a loss of around $606,000.
This move comes amid broader market uncertainty for Ethereum, which has been trading near $1,700 following a period of consolidation. The rapid turnaround in Hayes' position has drawn attention from the crypto community, particularly given his history of active trading in various digital assets.
While Hayes reduced his exposure, blockchain analytics indicate that other major players maintained or increased their holdings. Investment firm K3 Capital withdrew 10,000 ETH, valued at approximately $16.9 million at the time, from Binance. Separately, a wallet associated with entrepreneur Chun Wang acquired 7,650 ETH worth nearly $12.9 million.
These purchases occurred as Ethereum tested important technical support levels, suggesting confidence from certain institutional and high-net-worth participants despite short-term price weakness.
Ethereum has faced challenges in maintaining upward momentum after failing to sustain levels above key resistance. At the time of the transactions, ETH traded around $1,700, significantly below its April highs above $2,400. Technical indicators present a mixed picture.
On the daily chart, the price hovers near the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement level around $1,703. The asset rebounded from June lows near $1,507 but stalled below the 61.8% Fibonacci level near $1,856. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) remains below 50, and the MACD stays in negative territory, indicating that bearish pressure persists in the short term.
Liquidation heatmaps reveal significant leveraged positions clustered between $1,780 and $1,820, with notable liquidity near $1,800. A decisive move above this area could target higher levels, while a breakdown below $1,700 support might test lower zones around $1,620 or the recent June lows.
Hayes' actions align with a pattern of opportunistic trading in volatile conditions. His entry followed a period of improved market sentiment after geopolitical developments, including a transfer of 3,000 ETH from a market maker. The swift exit highlights the challenges of timing in cryptocurrency markets, where rapid shifts can lead to losses even for experienced participants.
Despite this, sustained buying from other whales near support levels may signal underlying conviction in Ethereum's longer-term prospects. The second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap continues to face broader questions about its performance relative to Bitcoin, with some analysts debating potential bottom formation.

The divergence between individual trader exits and institutional-style accumulation underscores the varied strategies at play in the current market environment. Ethereum's price action in the coming days will likely hinge on whether it can defend current support or break out of the established trading range.
