ZEC has recovered strongly from a steep decline triggered by a critical vulnerability disclosure, with trading volumes surging and short positions liquidated amid renewed buyer interest
Zcash (ZEC) experienced a severe price drop last week following the public disclosure of a significant vulnerability in its network codebase. The issue, related to the Orchard shielded pool, raised serious concerns about the potential for unauthorized token minting, which could have undermined the cryptocurrency's supply integrity.
The revelation, made by Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox, led to a rapid loss of confidence among investors. ZEC plummeted to around $250 on June 5, representing one of the sharpest declines in recent market history for the privacy-focused coin.
Despite the initial panic, buyers stepped in aggressively at the $250 support level. This demand prevented a further collapse and initiated a steady recovery. ZEC has since climbed to approximately $530, more than doubling from its recent lows and outperforming many other major cryptocurrencies.
Trading activity has increased substantially during the rebound. Volumes nearly doubled in the past 24 hours, reaching around $1 billion, which accounts for roughly 10% of Zcash's circulating market capitalization. This surge in participation indicates growing market engagement.
While the price has recovered, on-chain metrics show mixed signals. The Orchard Pool saw one of its largest withdrawal events on record, with nearly 800,000 ZEC tokens moved out since the disclosure. At current prices, this represents about $400 million leaving the shielded pool, potentially signaling caution among long-term holders.
However, the swift patching of the vulnerability through coordinated developer efforts, including the Zcash Open Development Lab, has helped restore some stability. No evidence of actual exploitation was reported, which limited the damage.
Technical indicators on the ZEC/USD 4-hour chart have turned bullish. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has risen above its signal line to around 77, reflecting strong short-term momentum. Rising volumes support the potential for further gains if the current trend holds.
A daily close above the $500 level would reinforce bullish sentiment and could open the path toward the $550 resistance. Analysts note that sustained strength might push prices higher, though false breakouts remain a risk in post-crash environments.
| Level | Type | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| $500 | Psychological | Key level for confirming bullish continuation |
| $416 | Support | 4-hour liquidity zone, potential retest area |
| $300 | Deeper Support | Longer-term potential floor if breakdown occurs |
Despite the impressive rebound, challenges persist. Questions around network security and long-term investor confidence could resurface. A failure to maintain above $500 might lead to renewed selling, with potential retests of lower supports.
The event highlights the importance of robust auditing and rapid response in cryptocurrency development. Zcash's privacy features remain a core strength, but incidents like this underscore ongoing vulnerabilities in complex blockchain systems.
Zcash has demonstrated resilience in the face of a major setback, but the path forward will depend on restoring full trust in the protocol's security and supply guarantees. Investors should remain cautious as the cryptocurrency market continues to react to both technical developments and broader sentiment.
