Morpho, a leading decentralized lending protocol, has secured $175 million in funding at a $2 billion valuation, accelerating its push to create customizable onchain credit markets for institutions and global users
Morpho has completed one of the largest funding rounds in decentralized finance history, raising $175 million. The round was co-led by Paradigm, a16z crypto, and Ribbit Capital, with participation from Apollo Funds, Circle Ventures, VanEck, Ledger Cathay, Variant, Wintermute Ventures, and others including SBI Group and Bpifrance.
This marks Morpho's fourth institutional raise. The investment was structured as a token purchase of MORPHO tokens at the monthly average price, resulting in a valuation of up to $2 billion. The announcement drove a notable increase in the token's price.
Unlike earlier protocols that rely on shared pools with uniform rules, Morpho enables users and institutions to create their own customized lending markets. Participants can set specific parameters for collateral, risk limits, assets, and counterparty exposure.
This modular approach has driven adoption. Major platforms including Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, Anchorage Digital, and Galaxy Digital integrate Morpho for lending, borrowing, and yield products. The protocol operates across multiple chains and currently holds around $6.5-6.6 billion in total value locked, narrowing the gap with market leader Aave.
Morpho co-founder Paul Frambot stated that the company is building infrastructure to connect excess capital with financing needs worldwide. “We’re building the open credit network for the world, connecting those with excess capital to those who need financing, globally.”
The new capital will support deeper commercial and technical integrations with partners, expanding credit infrastructure and embedding lending tools into existing platforms serving both crypto and traditional finance users.
Morpho's design has attracted significant institutional interest, including support from the Ethereum Foundation. The protocol's open-source, immutable contracts align with preferences for transparent infrastructure.
While competing directly with Aave, Morpho benefits from its flexibility. Institutions can use it to launch tailored products without building everything from scratch. Recent integrations, such as Coinbase's crypto-backed loans, demonstrate real-world usage scaling into billions in originated volume.
Gabe Mennesson of Ribbit Capital noted the scale of opportunity: lending remains one of the largest profit pools in financial services, but much of its infrastructure is still fragmented and inefficient. Morpho aims to address this through blockchain-based efficiency and transparency.
With the fresh capital, Morpho intends to strengthen partnerships across banks, fintechs, asset managers, and crypto platforms. The focus remains on providing shared infrastructure rather than competing directly as a standalone platform.
Co-founder Merlin Egalite described the raise as the largest in DeFi history. The funding positions Morpho to expand its reach as traditional finance increasingly explores onchain opportunities for higher yields and continuous global settlement.
