Zcash has surged over 10% in the past day following swift remediation of a serious vulnerability in its Orchard shielded pool. The project is now advancing the Ironwood proposal, described as its most significant network upgrade to date, aiming to restore full supply verifiability and strengthen privacy infrastructure
On May 29, security researcher Taylor Hornby identified a critical flaw in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool, which had been operational since its launch in May 2022. The vulnerability potentially allowed an attacker to generate counterfeit ZEC tokens within the shielded environment without producing any detectable on-chain evidence.
Hornby discovered the issue using advanced AI-assisted auditing tools. The finding prompted immediate concern across the Zcash community about the integrity of the privacy-focused system and the overall token supply.
Zcash developers acted decisively. The Zcash Open Development Labs (ZODL),Shielded Labs, and the Zcash Foundation coordinated an emergency network upgrade known as NU6.2. This was implemented at mainnet block 3364600 on June 3, addressing the core issue in the halo2_gadgets component.
A parallel soft fork and additional node software updates (zcashd v6.12.5 and v6.20.0) were deployed to temporarily disable Orchard actions and fix related node stability concerns. These measures helped stabilize the network while a longer-term solution was prepared.
Zcash experienced significant volatility following the disclosure. The price dropped sharply, reaching lows around $250-$300 from previous levels above $600. However, the swift action by developers led to a strong rebound. As of the latest reports, ZEC has climbed approximately 10% in 24 hours, trading near $426 and showing over 70% recovery from its recent bottom.
This recovery reflects growing confidence in the project's ability to manage critical issues transparently and effectively.
To fully resolve lingering concerns about potential counterfeit tokens and restore verifiable supply, developers have proposed the Ironwood upgrade. This introduces a new, repaired shielded pool while deprecating the vulnerable Orchard pool for new activity.
Funds would move through a "turnstile" mechanism — an accounting checkpoint — before entering the Ironwood pool. This design allows node operators to verify total ZEC supply by summing balances across pools, ensuring no excess tokens enter circulation.
Shielded Labs noted that successful migration without excess tokens attempting to exit the old pool would provide strong evidence that the vulnerability was not exploited. The turnstile would block any invalid outflows, protecting the network's integrity.
Zcash has long positioned itself as a leader in privacy-preserving cryptocurrency technology. The Orchard pool was central to its shielded transaction capabilities. The Ironwood proposal not only patches the immediate flaw but also incorporates additional formal verification and independent audits for the protocol.
Community discussions have highlighted both technical and philosophical questions around proof of non-exploitation. Figures like former Ripple CTO David Schwartz commented that users remaining in the original pool would likely keep their funds safe and accessible, though with reduced liquidity.
The coordinated effort involving ZODL, Tachyon, Valar Group, the Zcash Foundation, and Shielded Labs demonstrates the project's robust governance and development ecosystem.
Developers aim to activate the Ironwood upgrade in late July 2026, subject to thorough testing and ecosystem coordination. This upgrade represents a pivotal moment for Zcash, potentially reinforcing its reputation for security and resilience in the competitive privacy coin sector.
