Zcash experienced a sharp decline after the disclosure of a long-standing vulnerability in its Orchard privacy pool, but quickly recovered as the development team provided reassurances about the network's security and the uncompromised status of its total supply
Zcash (ZEC),a prominent privacy-focused cryptocurrency, faced significant market turbulence following the revelation of a soundness vulnerability in its Orchard shielded pool. The issue, which had reportedly gone undetected since May 2022, raised concerns among investors about the potential for undetected counterfeit token minting.
The vulnerability came to light on May 29 during an ongoing protocol audit conducted by independent security researcher Taylor Hornby on behalf of Shielded Labs. A soundness flaw of this nature could theoretically allow the network to accept invalid transactions, prompting immediate action from the Zcash development team.
The Zcash Open Development Lab promptly coordinated a network upgrade in response to the issue. A soft fork was successfully implemented on June 1, marking only the second security-driven protocol upgrade in Zcash's history since its 2016 launch. Developers emphasized that the fix fully remediated the vulnerability.
Importantly, the team reported no evidence of exploitation. They highlighted Zcash's turnstile mechanism, which offers visibility into value flows in and out of shielded pools, as a critical safeguard maintaining the integrity of the protocol's 21 million coin supply cap.
Following the disclosure, ZEC plunged from highs near $645 to a low of $250, representing losses of up to 48%. However, the cryptocurrency staged a notable recovery, climbing as much as 30% to reach highs around $401. At the time of recent reports, ZEC was trading near $369, up approximately 21% in a 24-hour period.
Market observers attributed part of the rebound to short covering, as traders who had positioned for further declines adjusted their bets. The swift response from developers and lack of confirmed exploitation helped restore some confidence in the asset.
The incident drew attention from notable participants in the cryptocurrency space. Dragonfly managing partner Haseeb Qureshi and Grayscale founder Barry Silbert publicly commented on the situation, contributing to broader discussions about the vulnerability and its implications for Zcash.
Zcash has historically positioned itself as a leader in privacy-preserving blockchain technology. The Orchard upgrade represented an important step in enhancing its shielded transaction capabilities, making the discovery of this vulnerability particularly noteworthy for the project's long-term credibility.
The episode underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining robust security for complex privacy features in blockchain networks. Privacy coins like Zcash must balance sophisticated shielded pool mechanics with transparent assurances to users about supply integrity and resistance to exploitation.
| Metric | Value |

The Zcash community and development team continue to focus on strengthening the network's security posture, ensuring that privacy features do not come at the expense of verifiable integrity. As the market digests this event, ZEC's performance will likely reflect ongoing confidence in these foundational safeguards.
