A critical flaw in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool triggered a sharp 36% price drop for ZEC, with BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes selling his full holdings due to concerns over unprovable past exploitation
Zcash experienced significant market pressure after the disclosure of a serious vulnerability in its Orchard privacy pool. Security researcher Taylor Hornby identified the flaw on May 29, which involved an issue in the cryptographic circuit that could have allowed the creation of unlimited counterfeit ZEC in shielded transactions.
The Zcash team, including Shielded Labs and the Zcash Open Development Lab, acted swiftly. Developers implemented an emergency hard fork to address the problem by early June. Despite the quick response, the privacy design of the Orchard pool means there is no cryptographic proof that the vulnerability was not exploited prior to the fix.
BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes publicly announced the sale of his entire ZEC position shortly after the details emerged. In a post on X, he stated that the "Holy Trinity" was dead, referring to his recent holdings in Zcash, Hyperliquid, and Near Protocol.
This exit by a prominent figure amplified the selloff, as traders reassessed risks associated with privacy coins where supply integrity questions can persist undetected.
Following the sharp decline, market participants are closely monitoring key support levels. The 200-day exponential moving average around $367 stands out as a critical area, coinciding with a high-volume node from previous trading activity.
Momentum indicators reflect the intensity of the move. The daily RSI has fallen to approximately 37, signaling strong selling pressure without yet reaching deeply oversold conditions. Bollinger Bands show the price pressing against the lower band, suggesting potential for continued volatility.
Perpetual futures data indicates that much of the leveraged long positioning has been cleared, potentially setting the stage for mean reversion if negative sentiment eases.
Reactions within the crypto community varied. Some highlighted inherent risks in privacy protocols, noting that complex zero-knowledge circuits can harbor subtle bugs difficult to detect through standard reviews.
Others viewed the disclosure positively as evidence of effective security processes. Barry Silbert of Digital Currency Group expressed support for Zcash, noting the proactive response.
Zcash has faced similar concerns in the past, including a 2018 cryptographic vulnerability that was addressed without reported losses. Developers are now working on a network upgrade to enable verification of the circulating supply and prove the absence of counterfeit coins in the Orchard pool.
The incident has reignited discussions about the trade-offs in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies. While the design protects user transactions, it also complicates verification of network integrity during vulnerabilities. The Zcash team emphasized that the bug required advanced tools and AI assistance to uncover, having withstood prior expert scrutiny.
No evidence of actual exploitation has surfaced so far, but the uncertainty continues to weigh on market confidence. As the ecosystem evolves, such events underscore the importance of robust auditing and rapid response mechanisms in decentralized finance.

The coming days will likely test whether the market can move past the immediate concerns or if lingering doubts about supply integrity will drive further adjustments in ZEC's valuation.
